A Nigerian national was arrested on Sunday night for allegedly raping a 22-year-old Manipuri woman from Mumbai at his residence in Avalahalli on May 13.

Johnson, the accused, and the victim’s 28-year-old aunt had met through Facebook. The two women came to the City on May 11 on Johnson’s invitation and were staying in his flat. The victim was studying nursing in Mumbai, while her aunt worked in a spa.
On the day of the incident, Johnson sought the victim’s help to fetch water from another flat in the same building, while her aunt was asleep. He allegedly raped her in the flat and threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed it to her aunt.

Following the incident, the victim suffered severe bleeding, which continued even after she reached Mumbai. When she was taken to a hospital, the doctors revealed that she had sustained internal injuries and would need a reconstructive surgery to rectify it.

During the stay in the hospital, the victim told her aunt about being raped during their Bangalore visit.

A case was registered at the Nerul police station after the Maharashtra Minorities Commission informed the police. The case was later transferred to Avalahalli police station since the incident had taken place here.

Avalahalli police said Johnson, a BBM student from Garden City College, was staying in Bangalore on a student visa. He has been taken into police custody after being produced before the court on Monday. The police said they need to check his visa details and the embassy will also be informed about the incident.

A police team will be leaving for Mumbai to record the victim’s statement. The police said that unless they record her statement, a complaint cannot be filed.
