Heavy rain batters Bellary

More than 900 houses collapse; loss put at Rs 27 lakh

Four persons at Madhinoor village in Koppal taluk were seriously injured when their house collapsed on Monday evening. The loss was estimated at Rs 27 lakh.

The injured have been identified as Siddamma Shivanna Bariker (12), Shantamma Malkajappa Kammar (30), Dhananjaykumar (3) and Hanthangouda (25). They have been admitted to a hospital at Koppal. Kudithinimaggi and Ambali villages at Hagaribommanahalli in the district have been flooded. However, no casualty has been reported. Relief centres have been opened at Kottur and Bevur villages in Kudligi taluk. The district administration is working on a war-footing to rehabilitate the rain-hit people. “Crops on thousands of acres of land have been destroyed. The damage caused by the incessant rain is being assessed,” officials said.

The district has received  72.6 mm of rainfall so far. The taluk-wise break-up of rainfall and house collapse is as follows: Bellary-120.6 mm rainfall, 421 houses; Sandur-21.6 mm, 62; and Hagaribommanhalli-101.4 mm,  100. Four-hundred-and-eighty-four houses have collapsed at Kolur, Rupangudi and Bellary Hobli.

Bus service hit

The worst-hit villages are Alabur, Kuditinimaggi, Sangam-eshwar and Honnalli. Bus service on the Itagi-Kottur state highway was suspended.
