The lion of Gujarat

The fans of Sanjay Dutt are in for a special treat this year as the superstar continues to play some of the most diverse roles. After winning acclaim for his menacing portrayal of Kaancha Cheena in Agneepath, Sanjay is all set with yet another exciting role for Shree Ashtavinayak’s next, directed by Soham Shah.

News is that Sanjay Dutt will portray a 1970s Gujarat-based ‘Robin Hood’, a lean and mean character unlike any seen onscreen till date. The first shooting schedule is now underway in Jaipur, Rajasthan, where a huge set has been put up for the mammoth big-budget venture. Apparently, the team has left no stone unturned to create a huge set.

A massive coal mine with tunnels, chimneys and train tracks has been erected to match the ambience and power of the Gujarat of 1970s and director Soham Shah says he could see nobody but Sanjay Dutt in this role.

“The character has a lot of power and I wish to portray Sanjay Dutt on the lines of his esteemed father Sunil Dutt saab in a very earthy character. I wouldn’t have made this film if Sanjay saab wouldn’t do it as only someone like him can carry this kind of character,” says Soham.

Along with Sanjay Dutt, the film also stars Vivek Oberoi, Humaima Mallick (of Bol fame) and Paresh Rawal. Slated for a December release, the movie is based on the Gujarat underworld and will be shot on a start-to-finish 50 days schedule in Jaipur.

Apart from this schedule, the songs in the movie will be shot in Mumbai. Well, we are sure movie-lovers can’t wait to catch this unusual and exciting avatar of Sanjay Dutt.

A complete mama’s boy...

Actor-turned-rapper Jaden Smith apparently beseeched mom Jada Pinkett Smith to include one of his new songs in the ‘Madagascar 3’ soundtrack. The ‘Karate Kid’ star was eager to have a track featured in ‘Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted’, in which his mom, actress Jada Pinkett Simth voices Gloria the hippopotamus, but it just couldn’t work out.

The ‘Madagascar 3’ actress reveals that her kids loved the first two installments of the successful franchise, and she was “flattered” the teen even asked to be included in the project.

Speaking from the Cannes Film Festival, the actress said, “My children are much older now but I was very, very proud and flattered when my son called me the other day and asked me to make a call to Jeffrey Katzenberg to put one of his songs at the end of ‘Madagascar’, not realising that it’s coming out in two weeks.

I told him that it was done. But I was actually really flattered that he thinks it’s still cool.” Looks like Jaden will have to try his luck the next time. Starring Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen and Cedric The Entertainer, ‘Madagascar 3’ releases in India on June 8.

An international collaboration

YRF Entertainment CEO Uday Chopra is joining forces with Pierre-Ange Le Pogam of Stone Angels to produce and finance the upcoming Nicole Kidman vehicle ‘Grace of Monaco’, directed by Olivier Dahan (of La Vie En Rose fame).

The movie portrays the efforts of the late Princess Grace of Monaco (Grace Kelly), played by Nicole Kidman, to make peace between her adopted country and France.
The project is the latest move by YRF Entertainment, a Beverly Hills-based production and a financing company that is a subsidiary of Indian studio Yash Raj Films, to develop, finance, and produce English language films for the American and global market.

Uday says, “‘Grace of Monaco’ is the kind of movie that has a perfect blend of talent and sensibility that YRF Entertainment is proud to be a part of.”

Le Pogam says, “When I first read the script written by Arash Amel, I thought it was a great story to tell with a lot of artistic, historical and emotional potential. When Olivier and I met Nicole Kidman for the first time, we felt she was the right artiste to portray Princess Grace.”

YRF Entertainment is currently also overseeing the post-production on Peter Glanz’s upcoming comedy ‘The Longest Week’, starring Jason Bateman and Olivia Wilde.

Another film in the offing

The makers of the successful and critically-acclaimed film Phas Gaye Re Obama have started working on their next project.

With an ensemble star cast of Sanjay Mishra, Vishwa Mohan Badola, Zakir
Hussain, Pragati Pandey, Sitaram Panchal, Ranjan Chabbra, Disha Pandey,
Paritosh Sand and Pramod Pathak, this film is a satirical take on life.

Directed by Anshul Sharma, the story is written by Rupesh Thapliyal and
Vijay Manral. “We believe in making entertaining family cinema and we are keeping up with the tradition.

Once again, I have assembled a group of highly talented artistes and technicians from among the best in the industry. They are all charged up and the shooting is on in full steam,” quips
producer Ashok Pandey.

‘Waheeda and Vyjayanti had spontaneity’

According to Dilip Kumar, who had Vyjayantimala as his leading lady in seven films and Waheeda Rehman as his co-star in three films, both actresses had a definite advantage as trained dancers.

“You will notice that they had a spontaneity in their responses and in the expressions they conveyed through their eye and body movements. Both showed exceptional interest in improving their performances by dedicated work and rehearsing without complaining when needed and not glancing at the clock,” he says.
