Social activist alleges negative campaign by Modi supporters

A social activist and the founder trustee of NGO Anhad, has approached Delhi Police to complain about a campaign being run against her on social networking website Facebook allegedly by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s supporters.

Shabnam Hashmi, a resident of Canning Lane, claims that the campaign, in which ‘filthy and sexist language’ is being used, is being run after she commented on Modi, as a panelist on a private news channel on May 24.

“The virulent attack amounts to criminal intimidation, threat to my life, humiliation as a person and more so as a woman, threat to my freedom of speech and thought and my right to liberty,” she said in her complaint at Tilak Marg police station. She said the filthy and vulgar language used aga-inst her amounts to public insult.

“I work across Inida and the attack is very intimidating as all the people attacking me are staunch supporters of Modi as is evident from their posts,” Shabnam said.

‘Communal internet posts’

Many of the posts are highly communal and many others directly give a call to kill her, she said.

On the basis of the posts, Facebook should be directed to delete the abusers’ accounts and block their access completely, she added.

In January, Shabnam was detained along with other social activists by Gujarat police when they tried to enter Godhra where Modi was camping for his 23rd Sadbhavana fast.

Her NGO had organised a programme ‘In Search of Justice’ to protest the Sadbhavana fast.
