Two BSY aides among six BJP nominees

Former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa managed to get tickets for two of his followers, among six BJP candidates for the elections to the Legislative Council from the Legislative Assembly. Polls will be held on June 11 to fill 11 vacant slots.

The party announced the list of candidates on Wednesday. The nominees are D S Veeraiah, Vimala Gowda (both sitting MLCs), B J Puttaswamy, Raghunath Rao Malkapure, Somanna Bevinamarada and M B Bhanuprakash.

Puttaswamy, a staunch supporter of Yeddyurappa, has been chosen despite being suspended by State BJP president K S Eshwarappa after he chose to contest as a rebel candidate during the recent Rajya Sabha elections.

Eshwarappa later withdrew the nomination papers. He was also political secretary to Yeddyurappa. Veeraiah, hailing from Kolar, is considered Yeddyurappa’s nominee.

Veeraiah was confident of getting the ticket as there is no representation for SC (right) in the State cabinet.

While Vimala Gowda (third term) and Veeraiah (second term) are being renominated, the others will be entering the Council for the first time.

BJP Haveri district unit president Somanna Bevinamarada, a Lingayat, and BJP State vice-president M B Bhanuprakash, a Brahmin from Shimoga, have also been given party tickets.

Raghunath Rao Malkapure, a native of Bidar and a Kuruba, is said to be the choice of Eshwarappa.

By virtue of its numerical strength in the Lower House, the BJP can win six seats in the June 11 Council elections. The members of the Assembly form the electoral college.

The election committee meeting on Wednesday had full attendance with Eshwarappa, Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda, party national general Secretary Ananth Kumar among others being present.
