21 candidates in fray for MLC polls

A total of 21 candidates are in fray for the elections to the Legislative Council from the South-Western Graduates, South-Western Teachers and Southern Teachers Constituencies, covering 10 districts, including Mysore, Mandya, Hassan and Chamarajanagar.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, Regional Commissioner M V Jayanthi, who is also a returning officer for all three constituencies, said the elections are scheduled to be held on June 10 from 8 am to 4 pm. Counting is scheduled for June 13 at JSS College on Ooty road.

In the Southern Teachers Constituency, comprising Mysore, Mandya, Hassan and Chamarajanagar, six candidates have been listed on the polls. A total of 43 polling booths will be set up for constituency voters, offically numbering 22,062 people.

In  the South-Western teachers constituency, comprising Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Chikmagalur, Shimoga and parts of Davangere district, eight candidates are listed on the polls. Sixty booths will be set up to cater 15,888 voters.

But by far the highest number of polling booths, numbering 83 booths have been set up in the South-Western Graduates constituency, to accomodate 57,237 registered voters in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Chikmagalur, Shimoga and parts of Davangere district.

The model code of conduct will be in force until June 15. In case of poll code violations, the public may inform either the district helplines, through a toll free telephone number, 1077.
