Garbage heaps vie for attention in Ch'nagar

CMC fails to improve waste management system

Heaps of garbage is now accumulating on the streets as the city municipal council (CMC) has failed to improve the waste management system in the city.

While wards across the city are facing problems of pollution, waste management has taken a back seat with CMC citing lack of pourakarmikas as the reason.

Under the CMC limits there are 14 industries, seven kalyana mantaps, 34 temples and 14,000 houses.

The 15 slums house one lakh population. Despite a significant increase in population, measures to improve the waste management system are yet to take off.

Earlier, waste management in a few wards was handed over to Sthree Shakti groups. A zero waste management unit was also opened. At present, the unit is lying idle and non-cooperation by residents has led to Sthree Shakti groups backing off from collecting the waste. Due to this garbage is strewn across the city.

Residents allege that the CMC has failed to appoint personnel for waste management. Plastic dust bins have been placed in only a few areas. With no awareness programmes being taken up by the CMC, residents are throwing the waste on the roads.

Siddabasappa, a resident of the city, blamed the CMC for the issue. “The CMC has neglected providing water to the city. Now, they have stopped clearing the waste too,” he added.
