JSS hospital staffers stage protest against poor salaries

Last Updated 04 June 2012, 18:58 IST

Workers of JSS Hospital in the city staged a stir, seeking revision of wages here on Monday.

Claiming that the workers were being constantly harassed, and were discriminated based on their caste, the workers said those who are working in the hospital since last 25 years, weren’t even drawing Rs 10,000 after putting in those many years of service.

Workers at the hospital are being made to work for poor salaries and under difficult work conditions, without providing proper facilities. Poor pay and sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities have left workers in deep trouble. When they went to the representatives of management, seeking better pay, they were told to form a union and approach the management.

After this was done, and the union members approached the authorities, they had changed their stance, and remained non-committal about making the situation better for them. Women ayahs face a lot of discrimination, and are forced to tolerate the usage of abusive words, against them. Some even face caste discrimination on a constant basis, the workers claimed.

Putting forth their demand of revised pay with better package, the protestors said management had to relent to their demands and do justice, failing which protests would be intensified. Mysore District Hospital and Nursing Home Workers’ Union chairman Seena, chief secretary Madappa and others led the protest.
