Two held for firing at man who fought them

Two miscreants have been arrested for shooting at a 35-year-old architect who tried to stop them from snatching gold chains worn by two women at Mansarovar Park in north east Delhi, police said on Monday.

Police have rewarded the architect with Rs 20,000. Vinay Sharma, a resident of north east Delhi's Ashok Nagar, is still undergoing treatment in a hospital.

Shiv Kumar and Sahil Malik, both aged 25 years, were arrested from G T Road at Shahdara on Saturday afternoon.

“We received a tip-off that two criminals involved in the robbery case at Mansarovar Park would  come to Shahdara to commit some heinous crime. They came on a bike and when they were asked to show the documents, we found that the bike was stolen. We also recovered a country-made pistol from them,” said additional commissioner of police (north east)  V V Chaudhary.

Kumar and Malik told police that on May 20 at around 3 pm they had shot at Vinay Sharma when he tried to foil the snatching bid.

Police said Manju, who is from Uttar Pradesh, and was walking with a relative, Sanju, when the duo stopped them and snatched her gold chain.

She started shouting for help. Vinay Sharma and his wife Chanchal, who were sitting in their car a few metres away, swung into action. Vinay rammed the car into the snatchers’ motorcycle.
Shiv Kumar and Sahil Malik fell on the road with the impact. Shiv Kumar opened fire and pumped a bullet into Vinay’s abdomen.

Chanchal was also fired at but she escaped unhurt. Witnesses told police that all the three woman tried to nab the attackers but they ran away, firing in the air and leaving their motorcycle behind.

Chanchal Sharma said, " We saw the the duo snatch the chain and try to flee from the spot. Seeing this my husband rushed to help them. Unfortunately, they fired at him which we hadn’t expected."  
Police found that the miscreants were involved in five other criminal cases.

Two witnesses, who helped in preparing a sketch of the accused, were also rewarded Rs 2,000 each. Manju, received an award of Rs 2,000 for her courage and helping the police identify the miscreants.
