JOIN USAn art work by famous British documentary artist Henry Singleton, "The Assault and the Taking of Seringapatnam"(1800), which was originally in the collection of Lord Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, will be auctioned at Osian's "Creative India" series sale focusing on Goa, Cholamandal and South India.
Singleton (1766-1839), who painted historical events on his canvas, was known for his interpretations of the Bible, Shakespeare's plays and contemporary historical events. Tipu Sultan (1750-1799), then ruler of the sultanate of Mysore, was also known as the Tiger of Mysore. A dour enemy of the British, he was defeated inthe Fourth Anglo-Mysore War and killed on May 4, 1799, defending the fort of Seringapatnam.
In a statement, Osian's said the "series will show antiquities and prints on Tipu Sultan and important art works from Tanjore, Tamil Nadu and Kerala". The auction will be held in Mumbai June 21.
A rare Tanjore Company School painting of "Devotees and the Temple Car", which was part of the India Office Library Collection in London, will also be a part of the sale.
The auction will be held at the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, Mumbai, June 21. The sale will also showcase art works of modern masters like D.P. Roychowdhury, F.N. Souza, K.C.S. Paniker, K. Ramanujam, K.M. Adimoolam, Reddappa Naidu, J. Sultan Ali, Laxma Goud, L. Munuswamy, S. Dhanapal, C. Douglas, S. Nandagopal, among others.
The June 21 sale is the last in the Creative India sales. It had begun with the art of "Bengal" followed by "The Punjab Hills & Delhi" and "Bombay & Baroda".
