Hunger strike against Malemar road

Last Updated 05 June 2012, 16:59 IST

Jana Hitharakshana Samithi in association with the residents of Malemar will stage a hunger strike, against the poor condition of the road, at Malemar on June 7.

Addressing a press meet here, Samithi president Kumar Malemar said that the authorities have concreted only 300 metres of road from Kottara Chowki to Konchadi and left the remaining road as it is. Malemar-Nekkilagudda area was divided between two wards and there was confusion over the jurisdiction of the councillors. This was the reason for lack of development, he alleged.

Kumar Malemar said “during monsoon, people faced hardship as rainwater entered their houses for want of drains. Buses avoided the area because of the bad road.”

He said “the City Corporation, which has shown interest in concreting the main roads of the city, has neglected the interior roads. With just two days of rain, the road has been converted into a slush field, causing severe inconvenience to the vehicle users, pedestrians and school children. He said “we have submitted memorandum to DC, MCC Commissioner and MLA Krishna Palemar in the past. However, all our efforts went in vain. As many as three buses ply on the road. In fact, Palemar had written a letter to the Samithi on June 23, 2011, promising to repair the road,”  Malemar said.

“The area Corporator has been stating that the contract to repair the road has been given to a contractor for the last one month. However, the work has not been started so far. Let the City Corporation give us in writing stating that they can not repair the road. We the residents will repair the road raising donation,” he said.

In the meanwhile, area corporator Shashidhar Hegde said that the foundation stone for the road work will be held on Wednesday at 11 am.
