Chennangolli tank cries for attention

Last Updated 09 June 2012, 17:22 IST

Chennangolli tank was a source of water for the cattle and birds.

The tank, which was once used by the villagers for washing the clothes, is in a total neglected state.

Weeds have covered the entire tank area and has converted it into a grazing ground for the cattle.

The Chennangolli village was created 25 years ago. The tank was existing before the village came into existence. The water was overflowing during monsoon. The water from the tank was irrigating acres of agriculture land.

As the area of habitation increased, the area under tank was encroached for building purpose.

Ramachandra, a villager said: “Ayyappa devotees were taking bath in the tank five years ago. In fact, a few villagers were depending on the water for day-today activities. However, now the tank is filled with silt.

The tank has been converted into dustbin for many, to dump the garbage. Even the gram panchayat has failed to clean the tank.”

Speaking to Deccan Herald, gram panchayat member Vincent Babu said: “Zilla panchayat former member Manjula had repaired the tank with an estimated cost of Rs two lakh a few years ago.

However, the issue of the land belonging to the tank is before the court and no development work can be taken up.”
