'Kodagu-Nagpur orange plants are same'

For the revival of oranges in Kodagu, the grafts of loose jacket oranges from Nagpur are being distributed among the farmers. The growers need not worry over it, said Zilla Panchayat President V M Vijaya.

Speaking to press persons, he said “some organisations have been making false statement against distribution of Nagpur variety of orange plants. They are unnecessarily creating confusion in the minds of the farmers. However, Kodagu and Nagpur varieties are same. The Nagpur variety is suitable to Kodagu weather.”

Farmers have already started growing Nagpur variety of oranges in Somwarpet taluk and Hassan districts. They have received good returns as well. The fruits are of good quality. In this regard, the horticulture department officials have received technical guidance from the Directorate of horticulture. Before purchasing Nagpur variety of plants, the officials and scientists had visited the nursery to check the quality of plants. The programme aimed at revival of oranges in Kodagu district. Abour 2.43 lakh orange plants have been distributed in Kodagu. Every plant costs Rs 19.5. Rs 47,38,500 was spent for purchasing Nagpur variety of orange plants, he added.

Chettalli Horticulture Research Institute Scientist Dr K Shivaram has also certified that Nagpur variety of oranges are suitable to Kodagu district.

Vijaya said the yield is quick in Nagapur variety of plants.
