Off-colour Vishnu in quarters

Second seed edges Tiwari

Davis Cupper Vishnu Vardhan wasn’t at his fluent best on Wednesday but the second seed still carried enough ammunition to seal a quarterfinal berth in the Toyota $10000 ITF Futures men’s tournament at the KSLTA courts here.

Vishnu quelled the challenge of unseeded Abhijeet Tiwari 6-2, 6-3 in the pre-quarterfinals to set up a clash with sixth seed N Sriram Balaji, who edged out wild card Venkat Iyer 6-3, 6-4, in the last-eight stage on Thursday.

Vishnu dropped his serve in the very first game of the match with three double faults but hit back in style in the next game to level the scores. Vishnu, the Guangzhou Asian Games mixed doubles silver medallist with Sania Mirza, served well and then broke his opponent in the fourth and eighth games. The Mysore-leg winner pocketed the first set when Abhijeet’s double-handed backhand sailed over the baseline.

The 24-year-old Vishnu started the second set too in not so convincing fashion and had to save a break-point in the first game. With Abhijeet also struggling with his serve and backhand returns, Vishnu raced to a 3-0 lead.

The match then went with the serve as Vishnu helped himself to a 5-3 lead. The Hyderabad lad set up two match points with an ace -- Abhijeet saved one with a deep return -- and sealed the issue with another ace.
