The four died on the spot when the tractor, which was carrying the iron mantapa with an idol of Lord Ganesha, came in contact with a high tension wire. The deceased have been identified as Srinivas (22), Govind (24), Gangaiah (32) of Ankalakoppa village, and Sundar of Nittur hobli, Bagur village.

The driver of the tractor swerved to avoid a huge pit on the Lake Road in Ankalakoppa, and the mantapa brushed against an electric wire. Four youth were electrocuted.

Five others seriously injured, were taken to the district hospital. They have now been shifted to Bangalore for further treatment. Legislator M T Krishnappa, S R Srinivas and Zilla Panchayat Vice-President K C Krishnamurthy visited the victims’ families and promised to give them compensation. The public urged the authorities to suspend the Bescom branch head, alleging that the high tension wire, which had posed problems earlier, had not been changed despite repeated requests.
