Mysore civic chief away from Dasara

Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K S Raykar, who is the Deputy Special Officer for Dasara — second in rank to  Special Officer and Deputy Commissioner P Manivannan — has been away in Detroit, the United States, since September 12, attending a conference on city planning and development.

He will return on September 18. The Dasara begins the next day. City engineers are directly accountable to Raykar in terms of civil projects which should be completed before the festival begins.

With the city playing host to thousands of tourists arriving from far-off places, beautification is of high importance.

These programmes are done under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), which is headed by the deputy commissioner.  Similar work is being carried out in  other parts of city such as Kalidasa Road, Gokulam, Vontikoppal, Bogadi, Kuvempunagar, Gayathripuram, Krishnamurthypuram by the Corporation.

With engineers reporting to the MCC commissioner directly, and the government laying stress on “total facelift” to the city with top-of-the-line civil projects, this seems to be a typical case of captain abandoning the ship at the most crucial moment.

According to MCC sources, Raykar was informed of the international event only recently. “He got to know about it after Dasara dates were finalised,” said a source claiming Raykar had “handed over” his Dasara responsibilities to Ramu, Registrar, University of Mysore.
