Chawri Bazar now under CCTV surveillance

Strategic points at Chawri Bazar, Sirkiwalan, Ajmeri Bazar and Peepal Mahadev Market in central Delhi’s Hauz Qazi area will now be under surveillance through CCTV cameras, police said on Friday.

Over 20 cameras have been installed in the first phase of the project which is a joint effort of Delhi Police and several traders associations of Hauz Qazi.

“It will help in recording activities from law and order and crime point of view in the crowded and communally sensitive area,” said Devesh Chandra Srivastva, additional commissioner of police (central).

“Although it was very difficult to install cameras in the sub-lanes of the markets due to already existing heavy wiring, but the agency involved has completed the project expeditiously,” he added.

The cameras have been installed in consultation with local police so that any important activity or event can be noticed at first instance. The control room, inside Hauz Qazi police station, will work round the clock. “It will be helpful in nabbing criminals and checking criminal activities,” he said.
