Suja Jones Mazurier hardly knew Pascal Mazurier’s true colours when she married him on October 20, 2001 in France. But four years into their wedding, she sensed that something was wrong when her husband began to turn abusive. Soon, she was a victim of domestic violence, said the police sources.

.
But Suja had also been trapped by the obligations of motherhood. On July 1, 2005, she had given birth to Samson Mazurier at Ernakulam in Kerala. A baby girl followed on August 2, 2008 and thereafter a third child, a boy named Joshua, born on September 24, 2010. All the three children have French citizenship.

According to Suja, the trouble began after the girl child turned a year old. When she turned two, the girl began to complain that her father was hurting her. Suja herself soon began to notice physical signs of sexual abuse. When confronted, Pascal claimed that the child had injured herself while playing on a slide. Later, Suja observed that whenever Pascal picked up their sleeping daughter and took her to a room, the baby complained of pain.

In May this year, the child could explain that Pascal was sodomising her.

Alarmed, Suja consulted a mental therapist, Dr Shaibya Saldanha of the Collaborative Child Response Unit at the Baptist Hospital on June 5. After another alleged rape on June 13, she took her daughter to the hospital. Tests indicated that the child showed signs of being sexually abused.

Suja told High Grounds police that Pascal always kept tabs on her movements.

Medical report expected tomorrow

Suja Jones Mazurier submitted smear samples of her daughter to the Bowring Hospital on Friday.

According to the doctors, the samples were sent to the Forensic Lab and the report is likely to be ready by Monday. However, only the police are authorised to collect the report from them, said a senior doctor at the hospital. The hospital sources told Deccan Herald that since the incident has happened a few days ago, there is little chance and scope for establishing rape angle in this case.

Geetha Menon, an advocate representing Suja, said the accused Pascal Mazurier, Chief of Joint Chancellerie at the French Consulate, does not enjoy diplomatic immunity as was reported in a section of the media. Besides, the police cannot let him go as the complaint against him is serious, she added. Geetha also took exception to the way Suja and her child were treated by the authorities. “The child was first taken to Baptist Hospital and there was enough proof of the crime.

What was the need to send the child and the mother to a different hospital for another test. The French Consulate should come forward and help the woman and her daughter,” she added.
