AP IPS officer goes into hiding to evade arrest

Last Updated 18 June 2012, 17:07 IST

In a dramatic turn of events, Additional DGP of Andhra Pradesh Umesh Kumar Reddy gave the slip to the city police on Monday who came to arrest him. He left his residence minutes before the CID team landed at his house around 7 pm with non-bailable warrants issued by a city court.

The IPS officer left his official phone and vehicle at his house, took an auto rickshaw and vanished. Police say the gunman and driver are being questioned about his whereabouts and say the controversial officer was likely to surrender before the court in a day or two.

The grapewine has it that the exercise, is also a result of the ongoing “tussle” between two IPS officers-DGP V Dinesh Reddy and Additional DGP Umesh Kumar Reddy.

Senior police officers in the state are flummoxed with the counter charges imposed by the two officials against each other. While, the DGP man accused Umesh Kumar Reddy of siphoning off four plots meant for the Grey hound commandos; Umesh has counter-charged the DGP of amassing huge properties in his wife’s name and demanded a detailed investigation by the government.
