Transport Minister R Ashoka on Wednesday promised a 10 per cent increase in salary for employees of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation, North-West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation and North-East Karnataka Road Transport Corporation.

Speaking at an event held to mark Dr B R Ambedkar’s 121st birth anniversary organised by the KSRTC SC/ST Employees’ Association, Ashoka said a decision on the pay hike will be taken in the next Cabinet meeting.

He commended the staffers, including drivers, conductors and mechanics, for the growth of the transport corporations.  He said one of the Traffic and Transit Management Centres in Bangalore will be named after Ambedkar.

Employees’ woes

F H Jakkappa, president of KSRTC SC/ST Employees’ association, said over 6,000 posts of conductors and peons are vacant.  Besides, the government has not confirmed the services of several drivers and conductors working on probation. These workers report for duty, but depot managers refuse to assign them any task, he added.

Besides, he said, the government should look into the pending cases against over 35,000 conductors in connection with work schedule and misbehaviour.
