Extortionist held for threatening Delhi Congress MLA

Last Updated 25 June 2012, 12:07 IST

An extortionist, on whose head a reward of Rs 1 lakh was declared, was arrested today for his alleged involvement in threatening and making extortion calls to a Delhi Congress MLA, police said.

Neeraj Bawana, a resident of Bawana in Delhi, was arrested early this morning for his involvement in five cases including the one involving the Delhi MLA, they said.

The arrest came on a complaint filed by Jaswant Rana, the Congress MLA from Narela, that
he got phone calls demanding Rs 50 lakh.

After almost a month of investigation, police got a specific input that Neeraj was seen in Rohini in north Delhi.

"At about 6.00 AM, a police team swiftly narrowed on Neeraj who was waiting for someone known to him to collect money," B S Jaiswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Outer District, said.

Fearing that he would be arrested, Neeraj took out a pistol and tried to fire to make way but in vain.

During interrogation, Neeraj confessed his involvement in five extortion cases this year.
Rana had raised the issue during the Budget Session of the Delhi Assembly earlier this month. Speaker Yoganand Shastri had directed the Chief Minister to summon the Police Commissioner and take stock of security for MLAs
