'Memorable' debut for Meghana

Karnataka's Meghana Shetty had to endure a long wait before she could lay her hands on her first medal in senior ranks at the 52nd National Inter-State Athletics Championships on Tuesday.

Meghana, who is still a junior, finished third in the women's 100M hurdles but the official results placed her in fourth position, behind Tamil Nadu's Hani.
An intrigued Meghana and her mother waited for the timings that showed her to have finished in 14.63 seconds.

The Karnataka officials then took up her case with the technical delegate, armed with the photo-finish printout and results from the trackside judges.

Convinced that they had erred, the officials then revised the results, placing Meghana in third position, with a personal best time of 14.51 seconds. The Mount Carmel student, a trainee of V R Beedu, had a previous best of 14.81, while she had timed 14.87 in the semifinals earlier in the day.

By then, the medals had been awarded and despite several announcements, Hani failed to turn up. But that didn't stop the organisers from presenting a different medal to Meghana, who had a debut to remember in more ways than one!
