Last Updated 04 July 2012, 19:16 IST

To ensure periodic revision of fares in metro rail networks across the country, the Union Urban Development Ministry is working on a new fare policy.

The proposed policy, which will be applicable to all metro rail networks, will ensure periodic hike of the fare taking into account, the hike in electricity charges, employees wages and other input costs, Urban Development Ministry Secretary Sudhir Krishna told reporters.

“The ministry was trying to create a rational and transparent formula for fare revision which would be applicable to all Metro rail networks in the country,” said Krishna. The fare policy will explain what issues should be taken into account, while revising the fare.

He also clarified that the there will not be uniform fare among all metro rail networks. The respective metro rail corporations will be free to decide the fare depending on the local situation and costs of running the transport system.

It may be noted that recently, the Centre also mooted that electricity distribution companies should revise their tariff regularly based on the power production cost.
