Last Updated 24 May 2017, 19:32 IST

A highly decomposed body of a woman, said to be in her late twenties or early thirties, was found at a house in Ejipura on Wednesday afternoon.

The police are yet to ascertain the identity of the deceased though neighbours have identified her as Priya, a native of Tamil Nadu. A roommate of Priya, identified by her neighbours as Geetha, has gone missing. Both of them had rented the house a week ago after they gave an advance of Rs 10,000 to Mariyappa, the house owner. Mariyappa, who lives nearby, smelt foul smell emanating from the single-bedroom ground floor house on Wednesday and alerted the police.

When the police opened the house which was locked from outside, they found the smell emanating was from the bedroom. The body of the woman was found lying on the cot with her throat slit using a sharp weapon, the police said.

The police suspect the incident occurred after Sunday as the neighbours and the owner claim to have seen the woman in the house that day.

“The identity of the victim is yet to be confirmed. We have only got a few phone numbers as of now. Her roommate is missing and we are trying to trace her,” a senior police officer said. Sniffer dogs, fingerprint and forensic experts visited the crime scene and collected evidences and other clues. “We have registered a case of murder and have formed two teams for the probe,” the officer said.
