Jantar Mantar out of reach for Team Anna

Last Updated 05 July 2012, 19:03 IST

Delhi Police on Thursday denied permission to Team Anna to conduct an indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar from July 25.

The Police told the Team that the period would coincide with the monsoon session of parliament when other organizations also need space for dharna and demonstrations.

Police also cited security reasons.  However, Anna’s Team declared that they would defy the order.

The Team had asked for permission for the period of July 25 to August 8.
Angry Team members accused P Chidambaram for police’s decision.

Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, "official reason (to deny permission) -- Parliament in session. Are MPs scared of people of India? How far do they want people to stay away from them?"

"It is dangerous for democracy if Parliament and MPs start getting scared of people...Real reason is that Chidambaram is behind denial...Anshan (fast)will take place .. either at Jantar Mantar or in jail," he said. The indefinite fast is a part of the ongoing protest against the government’s failure to enact strong Lokpal.

"Our protest starts from August nine. But we have asked permission from July 25 to prepare the ground," S K Tijariwala, Ramdev’s spokesperson said.
