Elderly woman murdered

An 80-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by unidentified persons at her house in Attibele in Bangalore Rural district on Sunday night.

The assailants slit Ammayamma’s throat and made away with her gold chain, earrings and nose ring, all valued at around Rs 50,000.

Ammayamma and her husband Radeppa, 95, have four sons and two daughters. The daughters were married several years ago and stay with their husbands.

Three sons live in HSR Layout, while the eldest son, Venkataswamy Reddy, a farmer, stays in Attibele. The elderly couple stayed in a separate house at Attibele.

Venkataswamy provided them food and took care of their daily needs. Radeppa suffers from dementia.

The couple were sleeping in their house in separate rooms when the assailants broke open the door, killed Ammayamma, and fled with her gold ornaments, police said.

Worker beaten to death

A construction worker was allegedly killed by his friends after a quarrel over money, at Hulimavu on Sunday night.

Mariyappa alias Shambulinge Gowda, 65, and four of his friends went to a bar near Basavanapura Gate Sunday evening.

They drank late into the night and on their way home, picked a quarrel with Gowda over a financial dispute. Gowda’s friends allegedly attacked him and pushed him down. They smashed his head with stones and fled.

Gowda sustained serious head injuries and died on the spot, police said.

Some local residents who spotted Gowda’s body Monday morning alerted the police who rushed to the spot and established his identity.

Gowda was staying with his wife, two sons and a daughter at Basavanapura. The family hailed from Agnikote in Tamil Nadu and settled in Bangalore long ago.

Man pushed into lake

A borewell worker drowned after his friend allegedly pushed him into a lake at Kadugodi on Monday morning.

The victim was identified as Saleem, 26, a resident of Sadaramangala.

Police have arrested Tarun, 24, on the charge of murder.


Tarun and Saleem are natives of Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. They settled in Bangalore a year ago and were working for a borewell company. Saleem married recently and his wife stays in Visakapatnam.

Saleem and Tarun consumed liquor on Monday morning and went to Sadaramangala lake to unwind. Tarun picked a quarrel with Saleem over a petty issue and a fight ensued.

Tarun overpowered Saleem and pushed him into the water. Saleem, who was heavily drunk, tried to swim ashore, but Tarun pushed him again and he drowned, police said.

A few onlookers alerted the police, who along with local swimmers and fire department personnel retrieved Saleem’s body around 2 pm.
