Sonam and her lover Naveen were arrested yesterday for the murders committed at the house of Taqdir Singh in Kabool Pur village in this district on September 14, Senior Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar Rao said.

They told police that they were in love with each other but the girl's family objected to the relationship on the grounds that they belong to the same 'gotra' (sub-caste) and the same village, he said.

On the fateful day, the boy allegedly procured poison, the SSP said, adding the girl mixed it with food which was served to the family members.

When the victims fell unconscious, Sonam called Naveen to her house and the duo allegedly strangulated her parents Surender and Promilla, grandmother Bhoori as also her brother Arvind and three minor cousins -- Vishal, Sonika and Monica.

All the seven were found dead on their beds on Tuesday morning and the police had registered a case in this connection on the complaint of a relative of the family.
Sonam was found unconscious in the bathroom. After thorough investigations, the needle of suspicion pointed towards the girl, police said.

Taqdir Singh, the grandfather of the girl, was unharmed as he had taken little food and had apparently escaped from being strangulated as he was sleeping outside the house, they said.
