For not begetting son, man kills wife in Uttar Pradesh

The desire to have a son still seems to be a ''strong factor'' for many even in the changed socio-cultural society. In a similar case, a man allegedly strangled his wife in Uttar Pradesh for not giving birth to a male child after five daughters.

The 15-year-old relationship of the couple came to a fatal end on Monday night when 35-year old Salma was allegedly killed by her husband Arif in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareily town, about 250 km from here after a discord over the same.

Salma had five daughters and her husband used to blame her for not giving him a son. He had even brought another woman home and said that he was going to marry her as he wanted a son. However, Salma and her parents opposed it and Arif had to abandon the idea then.

“Salma’s married life had become a hell...Arif used to beat her mercilessly...he used to threaten her that he would kill her'', alleged Salma’s father Abdul Aziz who was told by Arif that Salma committed suicide after her death.

No attention

The neighbours, who were used to their fights, did not pay much attention when they again had a verbal duel on Monday night. They came to know about the tragedy only after Salma’s parents reached there on Tuesday morning.

“An FIR has been lodged and the body has been sent for post-mortem...Arif has been absconding,” said police inspector Shahroz Khan.

In the past also, several women had been killed by their husbands for not bearing them male children. Only recently a man, enraged over the birth of a third female child, had battered his two daughters to death and thrown their bodies in a canal in UP’s Barabanki district.
