An unattended briefcase in a Delhi transport corporation low floor bus created panic near India Gate on Wednesday afternoon as it was feared it might contain explosive. Later, after the checking nothing suspicious was found, police said.

Passengers of the bus found the briefcase and informed the driver and conductor thinking it might contain a bomb. The driver made a call to the police control room at 3 pm. The briefcase was cordoned off by police. A bomb disposal team and a dog squad was rushed to the spot on Rajpath Road. The bus was vacated.

“After proper examination of the briefcase, no explosive was found in it,” said Taj Hassan, joint commissioner of police (central range).

The bus – on route number 181 – was going towards Hazrat Nizamuddin from Jahangirpuri when the incident took place. Sources said the bomb disposal squad found some clothes and documents inside the briefcase. “We have identified the owner and it will be handed over to him soon. He might have forgotten it to carry,” the official added.

A mock drill was conducted at New Delhi railway station on Wednesday to assess the preparedness of the agencies in case of a terrorist attack and other disasters.
