Factions at loggerheads over portfolios

Last Updated 12 July 2012, 18:54 IST

The two warring groups in the BJP are now at loggerheads over allocation of ministries.

As per a sharing formula arrived between the Yeddyurappa group and the anti-Yeddyurappa group, all the 21 ministers in Gowda cabinet were sworn in on Thursday along with 11 new faces.

Now, the Gowda camp is said to be eyeing some key portfolios held by Yeddyurappa’s loyalists in the previous government.

Govind Karjol, who was in the race for the post of deputy chief minister, is said to have sought the plump water resources portfolio, held by Basavaraj Bommai for the last four years.

The Gowda camp wants Shobha Karadlaje to be divested of one of the two major  portfolios - Power or Food and Civil Supplies - she had been handling. It has also sought the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Development portfolio held by Jagadish Shettar.

But the Yeddyurappa camp is said to be in no mood to relent to any of their demands. The Revenue portfolio held by Gowda is the most sought after portfolio, with both camps seeking it.

On its part, the Yeddyurappa group is learnt to be keen that some key portfolios held by Gowda including Health, Co-operation and Higher Education be allotted to its camp.

Party general secretary (organisation) Santosh has held several rounds of discussion with the two groups and the party’s central leadership on porfolio allocation. The portfolio list is likely to be finalised on Friday.
