Irfan replaces injured Vinay for Lanka series

Paceman R Vinay Kumar has been ruled out of the forthcoming limited-overs series in Sri Lanka after picking up a right hamstring injury during training at the National Cricket Academy on Thursday.

“I was doing some sprints when I pulled up short. It was a routine training that the NCA trainers had asked us to do. At first it didn’t appear all that serious, but the MRI scans revealed it was Grade I muscle tear,” Vinay told Deccan Herald on Friday.

Baroda left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan has replaced Vinay for the series commencing on July 21.
Admitting that he was hugely disappointed on missing the series, Vinay exuded confidence that he would fight his way back into the Indian side soon.

“I can’t afford to brood too much about it,” Vinay noted when asked how disappointed he was with the setback. “Yes it was a great opportunity for me to further prove my credentials but you can’t help these kind of injuries. I need two weeks to get back to my normal shape and I am now looking forward to Safi Darashah tournament (Karnataka State Cricket Association’s season opening meet) to prove my fitness. I hope to get back into the squad against New Zealand in August and then make it to the World T20 squad,” he said.

Vinay, who has featured in 22 ODIs so far, last played in the Asia Cup league match against Sri Lanka in Bangladesh when he claimed 3/55 in India’s win.
