BWSSB spends 70 pc income on pumping Cauvery water

The BWSSB is spending nearly 70 per cent of its income on pumping Cauvery water to the City.

At a meeting with the corporators here on Friday, BWSSB Chairperson Gaurav Gupta said the Board spends Rs 300 crore a year towards electricity charges and once the II stage of the Cauvery IV stage is commissioned, the charges will increase to Rs 450 crore.

The chairperson said ever since the City has expanded, BWSSB’s responsibility in supplying water and sanitation had become major challenges.

Although BWSSB is receiving aid from international organisations for new projects related to water and underground drains, it is not receiving any aid for the replacement of existing pipelines. There is a need to increase the staff strength in each ward to look into the water valves and attend to complaints.

Gupta said the Board cannot maintain the borewells sunk by BBMP henceforth. There is a need for a monthly meeting to address public grievances which has to be attended by Palike, BWSSB officials, and the area corporators, he said.
