Rahul Dravid, the ‘wall’ of the Indian cricket team, has been appointed as the special traffic warden for the City.

“It’s a new responsibility for me and I hope to discharge my duties effectively. I will join hands with the traffic police in any initiative they come up with,” Dravid said.

Addressing a large gathering at a function to distribute prizes for winners of road safety campaign here on Saturday, Dravid said the huge number of vehicles in the City was leading to traffic chaos.

‘Follow rules’

Appealing people to follow traffic rules, the cricketer said the initiatives of the traffic police to ease traffic congestion would yield result only with the support of the people. “Bangalore is a great city in India and let’s make it greater,” he said.

M T Nayak, Chief Traffic Warden, said there were 495 traffic wardens in the City including doctors, engineers, professionals, businessmen, school teachers and bank employees. The appointment of Rahul Dravid will help rope in more people, he said.

B G Jyothiprakash Mirji, City Police Commissioner, said traffic police were doing a wonderful job in the City despite many odds. He said the City has more than 42 lakh vehicles and traffic woes could be tackled only with public co-operation.
