A lab technician at Safdarjung Hospital has been arrested on charge of attempting to rape a 24-year-old pregnant woman inside the south Delhi government hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The victim, a resident of Defence Colony, in her complaint lodged with Safdarjung Enclave police stated that she was admitted to the hospital on Friday. She underwent necessary medical examination and was admitted at the gynaecology ward as she is expecting to give birth within three or four days.

She alleged that lab technician Praveen approached her around 1:30 am on Saturday claiming that the doctor had ordered her to undergo more tests. Sources said that she initially insisted that it was too late and that the doctor had told her that all the tests had already been carried out.

However, she accompanied the technician when he maintained that the tests were necessary and urgent. He then allegedly took her to a room in a deserted part of the hospital and tried to rape her.

When the lab technician tried to assault her, the woman shouted for help. Praveen tried to flee when he saw a group of people approaching, but was overpowered. The woman recounted the story to her family members, who went to the police and demanded action against Praveen.

He was arrested at the hospital on the basis of the statement recorded by the woman. A case of attempt to rape was lodged at Safdarjung Enclave police station.
