Drought relief measures on war-footing: KSE

The State government will implement measures on a war-footing to tackle the drought situation in the State, said Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa.

Speaking with mediapersons, after presiding over a progress review meeting of the various departments at the deputy commissioner’s office here on Sunday, he called upon all the elected representatives and the officials to ensure that all the drought-related works are implemented effectively in the district.

Due to lack of rainfall for the second consecutive year, the State was facing extreme water and fodder shortage, he said. He instructed the officials to focus on providing employment opportunities to the workers in the rural areas.

Eshwarappa said an amount of Rs 350 crore had been released by the Union government to implement drought relief measures in the State. The Centre’s drought study team which visited the State recently  stated that Karnataka had suffered losses to the tune of Rs 6,000 crore owing to drought.

The State government had already implemented drought relief measures to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore. The Union government is also supposed to increase its grants to the State. However, there was no dearth of funds to manage the situation. Jagadish Shettar, after becoming the chief minister, had given first preference to tackle drought in his maiden meeting, he said.

Meeting in Bangalore

The chief minister had also called a meeting of all the deputy commissioners and chief executive officers of the Zilla Panchayats in Bangalore on Tuesday. The meeting will specially deliberate on drinking water, fodder scarcity, drought relief measures, etc.

The drought relief measures implemented by the officials in the district were satisfactory. Some of the gram panchayats had delayed submitting the action plan and hence, there would be a delay in the implementation of various projects, the deputy chief minister said.

Eshwarappa said following the success of cloud-seeding measures adopted by the S M Krishna government, the BJP government was also contemplating on adopting the same.
