Jaya sacks minister

AIADMK leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha dropped one of the senior-most Ministers, K A Sengottaiyan, from the state cabinet and also removed him from the key party post of Organizing Secretary for unknown reasons.

Sengottaiyan, who was Minister for Revenue, will give way to Thoppu N D Venkatachalam, who will be swearing-in as Revenue Minister at  8-30 am on Thursday.  The Raj Bhavan, in a brief statement on Wednesday, said that the Governor has accepted the Chief Minister’s recommendation to drop Sengottaiyan from the Cabinet and appoint Venkatachalam in his place.

Sengottaiyan, who was among the last to enter the AIADMK headquarters for the MPs’ and MLAs’ meeting ahead of the Thursday’s Presidential election, looked downcast and was not his usual cheerful self when he came out earlier this evening.

The news of Sengottaiyan’s removal, which came barely two hours after the meet, surprised the political circles.    Sources said that Jayalalitha briefly talked about the complaints she has been receiving against various ministers and party functionaries.
