Ten students bag TOEFL scholarships

Last Updated 18 July 2012, 19:19 IST

Ten Indian students were awarded TOEFL scholarships worth $70,000 by Educational Testing Service in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The scholarships recognise the academic excellence of those who write the ‘Test of English as Foreign Language’ across India. The funding has been increased by $10,000 since last year.

The winners this year are from New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad. Delhi’s Ankit Talwar, who won a $10,000 scholarship, comes from a financially weaker background.

After his school hours, Ankit used to work in a flea market selling clothes with his uncle to support his family. His father had taken a hefty loan to help him get a good education. Since his first job at Ernst and Young, he has been the principal breadwinner for his family. But most of his salary goes in repaying the loan.

Ankit has decided to pursue an MBA at IE Business School in Spain. About 960 applications were received for these scholarships.
