Women Commission body of mourners: BJP

Last Updated 18 July 2012, 20:21 IST

Terming the National Commission for Women as a “body of mourners”, the BJP on Wednesday announced that its women wing will protest outside the commission’s office in central Delhi on Thursday for mishandling and revealing the name of the Guwahati molestation victim by one of its members.

A high-level inquiry and removal of the head of NCW were also demanded in a joint press conference addressed by state BJP president Vijender Gupta and BJP national secretary Vani Tripathi.

“The NCW has become a body of mourners that go from case to case after incidents of heinous crimes against women in the country have already happened,” said Gupta.

“We need an able body to tackle crime against women headed by an eminent woman, who also has a strong social stature. She must be able to provide a deterrent and not act just as a head of ladies’ kitty party, having political colour,” added Gupta.

He said so far most NCW chairpersons have remained representatives of a particular political party.

Gupta said the insensitive manner in which the NCW handled the Guwahati molestation victim has exposed the vacuum in a sensitive body like NCW.

Tripathi said disclosing the victim’s identity itself is a crime by a woman against another woman. “It is indeed shameful and surprising that the NCW was constituted and mandated to give justice to women who have been through horrifying experiences,” said Tripathi.

“But the NCW has become an adjustment zone for the political brass and has been politicised by the incumbent government,” alleged Tripathi.

The BJP also demanded a high-level inquiry and removal of such persons immediately, including the head of the commission. The party also asked for relief to the victim.
