Parrikar vouches for young leaders in BJP

Parrikar’s statement, in an exclusive conversation with this newspaper, leaves little doubt about which way he would lean if political fortune and the RSS clout weigh in his favour for the BJP’s organisational leadership. “While the older leaders like Advani will always be respected, the party should be governed by the youth factor, and I have no doubt this will happen soon,” Parrikar said.

After the recent electoral reverses and the turmoil it had caused within the BJP, it was the “obvious conclusion” that the party’s leadership would have to be handed over to the younger order, he said. Goa’s  Opposition leader who turns 54 later this year insists that he knows nothing of being in the race for the party’s top job, and says things are so far only in the realm of speculation.

“Goa is my field, but if something does emerge during the party elections in December, I will take a decision then,” he said. One of the few BJP leaders in Goa steeped in the RSS ideology, Parrikar holds a degree in mechanical engineering from IIT, Powai. He was Goa chief minister for two terms but managed to stay in power for only four years.
