Scams rock Kodagu Zilla Panchayat meeting

Series of scams in Akshara Dasoha schemes, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, oil palm cultivation, training in apiculture rocked the floors of zilla panchayat meeting here on Monday.

In fact, the issues  were raised by the ruling BJP members itself. B B Bharathish and Ganapathy Kodander raised the issue by furnishing documents. Supporting the view, the Congress members supported the ruling members and demanded Lokayukta or CoD probe into the incident.

The BJP members Bond Ganapathy, Bharathish, Ballaranda Mani Uthappa demanded probe into the misappropriation of funds while Standing Committee on Health and Education President Kanthi Beliappa said that there was no need to probe into the incident. Alleging that there was misappropriation in Akshara Dasoha scheme, Bharathish said “the demand for rice from eight schools in my constituency was 62,000 kg.

However, only 52,000 kg rice has been supplied. Similar is in the case of supply of toor dal and LPG cylinder. There was difference is supply and demand in all most all the schools in the district. Education department office and food supplying company is hand in glove in the incident,” he alleged. In 60 kg rice bag, one will get only 42 to 45 kg rice.

The issue should be probed by the Lokayukta or CoD. Zilla Panchayat President Ravi Kushalappa said that there was no need to hand over the case to Lokayukta. Standing Committee on Education and Health members will probe into the incident.

Member Bond Ganesh alleged that funds have been misappropriated while training farmers in oil palm cultivation and apiculture. The training is imparted by the SKDRDP. However, the officials have withdrawn the money claiming that they had imparted the training.

As many as 1,240 farmers have been trained in oil palm cultivation in Virajpet taluk. A sum of Rs 3.72 lakh has been withdrawn for the purpose. However, in reality, the money has been withdrawn three to four times. In the beneficiaries list, there are names of politicians, zilla panchayat members and journalists.

The beneficiaries have been selected by the officials itself without bringing the matter to the notice of the zilla panchayat members.

Zilla Panchayat Vice-President H M Kaveri, and others were present.
