Mamata wants to quit over petro hike

Last Updated 25 July 2012, 20:00 IST

Fumed with the rise in prices of  petrol and diesel after the state-owned oil firms on Wednesday recalibrated rates which reflected changes in local levies, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that if the government behaves in this way it is better not to stay in the government.

Banerjee said, “We have not increased the prices. I was in Delhi and didn’t know anything about it. Sitting in the AC chambers they are putting unnecessary pressure on common people”.

Terming the Central government’s decision as “blackmailing the people”, Banerjee asked, “Subsidy was lifted in 2003 and then why it is being implemented now? When you (central government) had not implemented the policy for nine years, then you should have reviewed it before taking a decision. What is the use of having such a government (at the centre) which perpetrates such frauds on the people?”
