Women hold the keys in Mysore Zilla Panchayat

Bhagya Shivamurthy president, Bhagyalakshmi vice- president

Continuing with their truck in Zilla Panchayat, Janata Dal (Secular) and BJP won the elections to the president and vice-president here on Thursday.

Bhagya Shivamurthy of JD(S) representing Yelwal constituency, and  H R Bhagyalakshmi of BJP representing Mullur seat were elected as president and vice-president respectively. They aren’t that lucky to have a long innings like their predecessors with their tenure set for two and a half months up to October 10.

Bhagya defeated her nearest rival of Congress Nandini Chandrashekar by four votes. Bhagya polled 25 votes against Nandini’s 21. The seat was reserved for backward class woman (BCB). Similar was the number of votes garnered by Bhagyalakshmi against her rival Congress’ C Jawaraiah in the election to the post of vice-president. The seat was reserved for scheduled class candidate.

There were four aspirants for the post of president alone. Apart from Bhagya Shivamurthy and Nandini Chandrashekar, M G Kalpana of JD(S) and M Manjula of BJP too had filed their nominations. However, Kalpana and Manjula resigned from the fray. For the post of vice-president only two had filed nominations.

Green-friendly

Pushpavati Amarnath who represents Dharmapura in Hunsur taluk, from Congress in ZP greeted the newly elected president and vice-president in a novel way by offering saplings of silver oak tree.

The green friendly initiative displayed by Pushpavati was indeed a cynosure of all the eyes amidst the fellow elected representatives who had bouquets to greet the duo. Regional commissioner M V Jayanti was the returning officer.

Deputy commissioner P S Vastrad and additional deputy commissioner Naga Nayak were also present.
