A minor tiff over using water from a public tap claimed the life of a 23-year-old woman as she was stabbed to death by her father-in-law and two brothers-in-law in north-west Delhi’s Wazirpur area on Thursday.

The woman has been identified as Mumtaz, who lived with her husband Mohammad Mukhtiyar and two children.

Mukhtiyar also suffered minor stab wounds when he tried to save her.

“A case of murder has been registered and her father-in-law, Roshan Khan and brothers-in-law, Bobby and Mohammad Shakil alias Babloo were held,” a senior police official said.
The brawl broke out between Mumtaz and Bobby over the issue of using water from a public tap outside their house at 8 am on Thursday.

“Bobby was taking a bath at the public tap when Mumtaz arrived there and tried to fill water in her bucket. Bobby stopped her from filling water and an argument broke out between them. Mumtaz’s husband who was in his room, came in support of his wife. He was, however, beaten up by his father and brothers,” the official said.

Seeing her husband being beaten up by her in-laws, Mumtaz immediately rushed to a nearby telephone booth and called up the police control room.

“Her in-laws got angry when she told them about the PCR call. In order to teach her a lesson, Roshan and Bobby overpowered her while Babloo stabbed her repeatedly with a knife in different parts of her body,” added the official.

“They also stabbed Mukhtiyar when he came to her rescue. Both of them were rushed to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital, where Mumtaz was pronounced dead on arrival,” the official also said.

According to a local shopkeeper, Mumtaz and her husband had a property dispute with the accused persons.

“They always fought over petty issues. We had never thought that their dispute would reach to this level,” Brij Kishor said.
