Dasara Games kick off today

One of the main attractions at the 10-day Dasara festival, the sporting events this year will have 17 disciplines with athletics being the main event. The three-day meet will also feature wrestling, basketball, ball badminton, handball, hockey, throwball, volleyball, football, table tennis, gymnastics, kho-kho, kabaddi, tennis, badminton, powerlifting, bodybuilding and swimming.

However, the death of 45-year-old swimming coach from Hasan, J Manjunath, has dampened the enthusiasm at the pool. Manjunath’s daughter Aishwarya was to take part in the swimming events. The sixth Mysuru half-marathon, another main attraction, is scheduled for Thursday. The race, which starts from North gate of the Mysuru Palace, will have competitions for men and women (21.1km), college boys (12km), college girls (6km), high school boys (6km) and high school girls (3km).

Handsome purse
The winners in both the men’s and women’s section in this popular race will stand to gain a handsome purse of Rs 30,000 each. Chamundi Vihar Stadium will host the athletics events with the other events being conducted at the Mysore University Sports Pavilion, Maharaja’s College Tennis Court and Mysore University Swimming Pool. Around 1,800 athletes from across Karnataka are expected to take part in the event Hockey legend Dhyan Chand’s son and former international Ashok Kumar will inaugurate the meet at the Chamundi Vihar stadium.
