Mayadevi Galagali who has been suspended as the director for planning of Urban Development Cell, after her tussle with H D Kote MLA Chikkanna, on Saturday received a shot in the arm when women in large numbers took out a mammoth rally in support of the officer.

The protesters that also included men and led by Bhanu Mohan of Parisara Samrakshana Samiti, took out a rally from the Maharaja’s College grounds to the office of deputy commissioner.

They staged a sit-in in front of the latter’s office for sometime.

Placards

The agitators with placards in praise of Mayadevi and comments against Chikanna alleged that the officer was being made a scapegoat by the legislator.

It was the same legislator who had tortured many officers to the hilt in the past including a sub- inspector.

If that’s the fate of an upright officer, what could be the treatment meted out to innocents by the legislator.

The authorities should revoke the suspension order and uphold the spirit of democracy, the agitators demanded.

‘Mercy of men’

Addressing the protesters Bhanu Mohan and other women leaders argued that the women officers are always at the mercy of men, especially people like Shivanna.

Additional deputy commissioner Naga Nayak received a memorandum from the protesters, assuring them of looking into their demand.

Rural areas

The agitators had descended on the city from the rural parts of the district like Varuna, Suttur, H D Kote, Periyapatna and Hunsur.

Police personnel attached to K R sub-division had made elaborate security arrangements under the supervision of  ACP  A N  Prakash Gowda.
