City's first MRI compatible pacemaker

Fortis Cauvery Heart Hospital claims to have performed  city’s first MRI compatible pacemaker on a 59 year old person.

Addressing a press meet here recently, chief interventional cardiologist of the hospital Dr C B Keshavmurthy said, 59-year-old teacher L T Anand Ramu, approached the hospital complaining frequent episodes of giddiness and loss of conscious, which upon diagnosis, doctors found out that patient had heart rate which was about 45 beats per minute, against the normal rate of 60 to 100 beats per minute, which was found life threatening.
“The patient was treated with MRI compatible pacemaker implantation, the first in Mysore.” The procedure took half an hour. A small incision was made on the left side of the chest and pacemaker was inserted. The patient was discharged after three days, he added.

Elaborating on the pacemaker, he said, about one million people worldwide get pacemaker implanted every year and many among them need an MRI scan during life time, the most common being brain, spine, joints and abdomen, which could be a serious risk for patients as most of the cases could claim lives of patients. Thus patients would be barred from undergoing any MRI scanning as exposure to magnetic radiation could cause complications.“But the MRI compatible pacemaker has no such effects.” Describing it further he said, the MRI compatible pacemaker is a boon for patients, who have rhythm disturbances and needs a pacemaker.

The compatible pacemaker would ensure that patients can safely receive the diagnostic imaging. “ The new device could eliminate such a risk and help the patients undergo magnetic radiation imaging safely.”

Dr J Rajgopal, Dr Nagendraprakash, Dr Veeresh and Dr Manunath were present.
