Congress leader calls Modi a 'saint'

Last Updated 29 July 2012, 19:18 IST

A Congress MP from Maharashtra showered praises on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi  on Sunday calling him ''Gujarat’s lion” and a ''nationalist saint.''

Vijay Darda, a senior Congress leader from Maharashtra, who was in Ahmedabad to attend a book release programme of Jain saint Tarunsagar, while addressing the gathering Darda commented that the chief minister had assumed a significant role in Indian politics he has become the “Gujarat’s lion”.

And while refering to Swami Vivekananda, Darda said Modi was following his path and thereby making him “nationalist saint.” Modi was quick to lap up the opportunity to embarrass the party further.

“Let me assure Vijay that tomorrow it will be the breaking news that you have been shot a notice by the party high command for praising me,’’ quipped Modi as the Congress MP looked on sensing the faux paus.

And within minutes after the event Darda gave a clarification to the media claiming that he had been quoted out of context.

“This is a totally non-political platform and we  should respect the integrity of this platform,’’ he clarified. But notwithstanding his clarification, the damage seem to have been done.

The Gujarat Congress was quick to distance itself from Darda’s statement.
“Whatever he has said is his own personal statement and the Congress party does not relate with this statement of  Darda.  Modi  is not forest’s lion but he is a man eater lion.

He has killed many people. Vijay Darda does not know about this because he lives in Maharashtra,’’ said party leader Narhari Amin.
Modi, meanwhile, used the platform to target Congress.

Gujarat CM lauds people of Bihar

He might have been at loggerheads with his Bihar counterpart Nitih Kumar, but on Sunday, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi went all out to shower praises on the Bihari community, DHNS reports from Ahmedabad.

Attending an event to commemorate 100 years of Bihar in Ahmedabad, Modi said people from Bihar had equal share in the state’s development.
