Homestay attack: 4 more arrested

The police arrested four more people in connection with the attack on youth in Padil on Saturday. The total number of arrests has gone up to 12. The arrested are Shailesh of Bajal, Chetan of Nagori, Harish of Alape and Sunil of Thokkottu. 

The Mangalore City Corporation has issued a notice to the owner of the homestay where the incident took place. The notice has been issued for not complying with rules and non-payment of commercial tax.

Protests against Saturday’s attack on youth continued on Monday. 

Apart from political parties, students’ organisations also staged protests. The college bandh called by Sarva College Vidyarthi Sangha was successful as most colleges in the city declared a holiday. 

Two of the victims, Vijay Kumar and Gurudutt Kamath, addressed the protesters at St Agnes College. Kamath requested all the youth to join hands in the protest. He said, “Today it is us, tomorrow it may be you. We have no problem coming before the public and fighting for justice as we are confident that we have done no wrong,” he said.

Liane Noronha, a student of St Agnes, told Deccan Herald that the students were planning to print posters of the accused and display them in various parts of the city.

"The assaulters have to be arrested and punished. We won't stop till justice is done," she said. Students of St Aloysius College too held a protest.

Two of the victims of the homestay attack have approached advocate Dinesh Ulepady to discuss the future course of action. 

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Ulepady said, “As an advocate, I can only guide the victims. They need support now.” 

If all the parents of the victims are united, they can urge the State government to appoint a special public prosecutor. They can also make representations to the human rights commission and women’s commission, he said. 

Women and child development department deputy director (in-charge) Sundar Poojary said he had collected information from the police and the victims and informed Women’s Commission chairperson Manjula C about it.
