Audacious gang loots Rs 41 lakh, flees crime scene unchallenged

The vehicle was carrying cash collected from petrol bunks

Three pairs of hands, brandishing knives and other lethal weapons, broke the windshield, grabbed the cash box containing Rs 41 lakh before making a smooth getaway. The incident took place in a narrow road behind the Ayyappa temple at Jalahalli under the Gangamanagudi police station limits here on Tuesday afternoon. The robbery was startling and brazen in its timing: It occurred in a heavily populated and busy area.

The police said that around 1 pm, a white Omni vehicle (KA-04-MA-2230) attached to CMS Securitas collected cash from different petrol bunks and turned towards Jalahalli. The driver of the vehicle did not realise that he was being followed by a yellow Tata Indica that carried a three-member Kannada-speaking gang. The Tata Indica picked up speed and, before catching up with the Omni, swerved to come right in front of the CMS vehicle.

Holding the driver and the gun-wielding Securitas personnel at knifepoint, the gang members, in their mid-twenties, smashed the Omni’s windshield. In a flash, the robbers stuck their hands inside the Omni and seized one of the two cash boxes containing a total of Rs 81 lakh. The robbers picked up a metal box containing Rs 41 lakh and fled the scene without any resistance from the Securitas men.
