Dengue deaths dominate Palike Council meeting

Opposition members storm into well of the House, stage dharna

The monthly meeting of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Council on Monday witnessed acrimony over dengue deaths. The Opposition members stormed into the well of the House raising concern over the increase in vector-borne diseases in the City.

The meeting which began at 10.30 am was adjourned for one-and-half hours for want of quorum. As soon as the House reassembled, the Congress and JD(S) corporators raised the issue of dengue deaths and alleged that vector-borne diseases were spreading fast in the City.

Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy informed the angry corporators that the Palike had initiated measures to check dengue, chikungunya and other diseases. He said 200 cases of dengue had been detected so far and the Palike had launched a massive campaign against the fever. “The health officers of the Palike along with government and private doctors are going door-to-door as part of the public awareness drive,” he said.

Unrelenting corporators

The JD(S) members were in no mood to relent and stormed into the well of the House. Congress corporators joined them. The protesting corporators alleged that the Palike wakes up only after people lose lives.

As commotion descended on the House, floor leader N Nagaraju moved 22 proposals for approval of the House. Amid the sloganeering by the Opposition, the Mayor okayed all the proposals, some pertaining to transferable developmental rights, garbage disposal, ward works and advertisements.

A ‘friendly skirmish’ ensued between Nagaraju and JD(S) floor leader Thimmegowda when the latter attempted to interrupt Nagaraju from reading the subjects for approval.

Some Congress members did not approve of the demonstration, which led to adjournment of the House.

They wanted a discussion on subject matters of serious concern. Congress corporator Rizwan had a heated exchange of words with Govindaraju of his own party in the Council. They would have fisticuffs if other members had not prevented them.
